Season's Round Up # 54: GUCCI FW2013 MENSWEAR

Gucci Menswear is known for creating impeccably gorgeous, dapper and stylish couture for men and the show they had for FW2013is definitely no exception to this long-standing golden rule. The clothes seemed to take inspiration from chivalrous soldiers heading back home to an idyllic Italian countryside where the colors of autumn - sky blue, rusty red, apple green, bright red-orange, grey and black - are best brought to life. According to CD Frida Giannini, “the Gucci man returns to a sartorial tradition only to live it on his own terms, pairing formal and informal as he likes.” “This is a contemporary gentleman with a romantic soul.” And romantic the collection truly was.

Season's Round Up # 53: GIVENCHY FW2013 MENSWEAR

HOTNESS. That best describes Ricardo Tisci'sFW2013 Menswear Collectionfor Givenchy. His typical collections evoke a sensual feel but this time around Tisci elevated it with rock and roll edge, sporty sexuality and Greek neo-classicism. You'll see a lot of iconic workwear and urban street wear separates all edged out in a dark color palette. Rock and roll glam for the perfect man [lol!]

Season's Round Up # 52: PRADA FW2013 MENSWEAR

Prada has long been heralded for her well thought of designs and this season is no different. If the staging of the entire show wasn't enough of an indication - the "ideal" house referencing the late 60's framed by imagery of cityscapes and a playful feline - I don't know what else would be. Prada's FW2013 Menswear collection was an epitome of contemporary design so if this is what you're after then look no further. It has been a while since Prada produced classical, elegantly poised and wearable collections, as the past seasons traversed her creative mind in ways that astounded and renewed the love for this brand. You won't be seeing any of the loud prints or screaming accessories and instead you'll see traditional garments decorated with more classic prints such as the houndstooth; bringing us back to the classic days of the label.

What made the show unique would be the use of slightly off colours, the ruffled tuxedo shirts and the thick grip soles that gave a twist to otherwise staple business shoes. The shoes are actually a bit reminiscent of the recently released FW2012leather "clown" shoes for men. That being said, the collection will definitely last in any man's wardrobe given it's classic stance.

Season's Round Up # 51: BURBERRY PRORSUM FW2013 MENSWEAR

The FW2013 shows have already begun with amazing menswear showing down the runway. But as I mentioned in my previous entry a week ago [OMG, yes it's been a week ago since I last wrote!] I'm going through a few changes on this blog and things have been so crazy hectic. Nonetheless, will do my best to feature some of the shows which I think are of note and first up would be Mr. Bailey's basic animalistic take on FW2013 for menswear.

Seems like Mr. Bailey wanted to go back to basic staples for fall-winter this year. The show was barraged with neutral fundamentals - from the color palette to the cuts of your typical black or grays 2 button suits, tan trenches and camel overcoats. What made this collection remotely exciting and enticing would be the speckles of pattern shown throughout the collection. Though the use of animal prints in fashion collections are not new, Bailey imbibed a sense of elegant sophistication with the sparse showing of animal skin on accessories used throughout such as bags showcasing tan zebra stripes and leopard spots covering must have shoes; even glasses [from the frame the lenses!] were covered in animal prints. Well, I guess the exception to this paltry showing of prints would be the grandiose coats with cheetah spots; though I must say even that seemed toned down with the neutral pairing & styling. We'll also see the classic Burberry Checks on shawls and bags - a rare occurrence in the Prorsum design mantra of late if you ask me.

What's new on the table though would be that lust worthy semi transparent latex raincoats in unique shades of milky white and purple. Oh and who can forget those tops and sweaters with heart prints. Cheekily genius! Definitely something I'd consider getting myself for FW2013!

Season's Round Up # 10: GIVENCHY SPRING SUMMER 2013 MENSWEAR COLLECTION
Givenchy SS2013 Menswear Collection
Givenchy SS2013 Menswear Collection

In season's past, we've seen Ricardo Tisci showcase various religious themes in his collection, but never has it been in such a grandiose scale other than in his latest offering for Givenchy'sSS2013 Menswear.Known for his eccentric and quirky sense of design, this season we see the Blessed Virgin Mary featured prominently as the key leitmotif, across pieces that ran down the runway. According to the designer, this season he attempted to go back to his roots, where his religion played a very big part. Apart from the religious overture, what I found most interesting in the collection is the play in pieces - where each one can "build" on top of another to create a totally different look. It's like playing lego, but in fashion! I think apart from these, I'm quite pleased with how Tisci is breaking boundaries by creating pieces that will work across genders - as you see in the slim cut trousers, the occasional man skirt and of course who can ignore the powerful statement of princess-y pink - a color that I must say reminds me of his now globally famous birds of paradise print - that was dominant in a collection shrouded by black and white.

I think of the items that were showcased, I must say I love the tailored pink pieces that went down the runway, particularly the double-breasted vest and the oversized round neck shirt spotted on a female model. I'm also in love with the chain sandals, specifically this one in white, which I must say is a refreshed reinvention of his past season's zipper sandals. Very avant garde!

Season's Round Up # 9: LOUIS VUITTON SPRING SUMMER 2013 MENSWEAR

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SA2KDSSLI3o] Though Louis Vuitton did not veer far away from the inspiration of somber colors this season, I believe their collection was marine-inspired enough to make a difference and stand out amongst the black, gray & blue hues we saw in the sea of SS2013 Menswear.

The collection featured pieces that you'd dare dream dashing naval officers wear when they sweep ladies off their feet. Finely made tailoring was evident in the collection from the various slim-cut trousers to the double-breasted blazers that we saw strut down the runway. What I think was the highlight and key differentiating factor of Kim Jones' collection this SS2013 would be the eye-popping coats, design details and accessories. From "brighter than the sun" yellow anoraks to those classic white boat shoes - lest we forget the exotic skin shoes and rope inspired sandals. Of course there's that gorgeous winged angel shirt and who can ever ignored those dangling pendants off blazer pockets and the piece de resistance - fluorescent [or classic LV printed ones for the more conservative fellows] rucksacks that just scream for attention. Well of course, if you are in need of more head-turning daring pieces, then maybe you can don the neoprene scuba diving suits that were presented towards the end of the show. Way too much? Maybe not for the fashion forward; but for the everyday man, I reckon you guys would rather stick to the key essential pieces of Louis Vuitton's SS2013 collection no?

Season's Round Up # 8: MUGLER, MC QUEEN & SIMONS SPRING SUMMER 2013 MENSWEAR HIGHLIGHTS

With the SS2013 Menswear Collections nearing it's fruition and the SS2013 Couture Shows just a week away, I thought I would write about highlights of some of the other designers that I thought had a good showing the past few days - MUGLER

Mugler Spring Summer 2013 Menswear Highlights

First up would be the work of Nicola Formichetti for the avant garde house of Mugler. This season, much like most fashion houses, we saw Formichetti exploring and playing with black & white colors – difference is the play is in its duality. We also saw a lot of unique and architecturally inspired cuts that is oh so rare in menswear. The whole collection felt very empowering and edgy, given the razor sharp cutout dominant couture that went down the runway. Though I must say, the collection is not as easily wearable/accessible as those of other designers, given its fashion forward feel. At the same time, it is because of this differentiating vibe that made the collection stand out and there are pieces -specifically the accessories & footwear - that I must say are worth the investment for SS2013. One of which would be the gorgeous cutout sandals available in a wide selection of neutral colors, and of course the reptile inspired belts and shoes in bright hues.

ALEXANDER MC QUEEN

I have very little to say about the Mc Queen collection from Sarah Burton - but all in good faith. It had a very simple, yet ethereal theme, focusing on designs that evoked a modern day take on the character of Dorian Gray. Color and texture played dominantly in the collection that brought to life the idea of a present day dapper gentleman. The looks above are amongst my favorites given the distinctive play of metallic colors that evoked a sense of varying textures. I also adored the use of dragonflies as a print on the ensembles, which I thought evoked a renewed sense of eeriness and whimsy vs. the brand's use of it's classic skull print. If these looks are not to your liking, fret not as the collection had a LOT of pieces that are more suited to everyday wear.

RAF SIMONS

With the pressure on for the showing of his very first couture collection for the house of Dior next week, Raf Simons has stepped up to the plate and shown the world why he is Creative Director with the eccentric SS2013 Menswear collection he launched this week. Androgyny was a central theme mixed with the powerful influence of art. I adored the contrast of tailored and constrained tops with the free spirit vibe of uber short shorts & sneakers - perfect mix of free-flowing form & function. Much like other collections, the color scheme was focused on somber shades of grays, blacks & whites with the occasional showing of bright colors like tangerine and grapefruit. What I thought was inspired would have to be the use of abstract art, reminiscent of Picasso's works, on shirts - where as the collection progressed more and more you see it on gender-bending pieces. Definitely would love to have those sleeveless long shirts that he paired with shorts - very fashion forward!

Season's Round Up # 7: GUCCI SPRING SUMMER 2013 MENSWEAR

I've been putting off my review for Gucci's SS2013 Menswear showing in Milan, as I wanted to wait for them to release the official runway video. Unfortunately it's still not out, so I'll just update the post accordingly, as honestly I can't wait to write about this one!

Gucci Spring Summer 2013 Menswear 1
Gucci Spring Summer 2013 Menswear 1

Gucci's offering for the upcoming season for men is as fresh and bright as it can get. Whereas most have donned minimalistic, subdued takes on Menswear for SS2013Gucci was bolder than ever! The looks that ran down the runway would be perfect for a summer retreat in Capri if I say so myself. You'll see tints of burnt orange, fresh lime green, saffron yellow and hues of electric blue that's enough to taser your senses.

Gucci Spring Summer 2013 Menswear 2

I also love the slim cut slacks[which are honestly perfect for my chicken legs!] that's been cuffed and short enough for you to still be able to gaze at the luxurious choices of Gucci'siconic horse bit loafers that come in a wide array of colorful options - you just want to collect them all! Patterns were all over the collection in such a good way and I'm specifically overjoyed with the lavish pairing of pinstripes and floral motifs with vestiges of white to help pare the looks down.

Gucci Spring Summer 2013 Menswear Favorite Pieces

I definitely have my beady eyes on a LOT of these pieces, specifically the ones you see above. That being said, I guess I'm preempting away the possibility that I might be a Gucci-clad customer cum Spring-Summer next year. I just love how bright and feverishly colorful the collection is and to me, it is the essence of the season - regardless if it's been done over and over again. At the end of the day, it's how you wear it and style it that makes it different in any case.
