Season's Round Up # 26: THAKOON SPRING-SUMMER 2013
Ever since Thakoon has been introduced into the crazy world of fashion by the great dame herself – Anna Wintour – his shows have been watched and highly anticipated by fashion’s elite. And this season makes no difference. If anything, this season marks his continued soaring into the upper echelons of New York’s finest fashion stars. Thakoon’s SS2013 Women’s RTW Collection embodied a sense of NYC dirty chic. It’s cool and hip, yet to a certain extent effortlessly romantic. It’s bold and thought provoking, yet feminine and classy. It’s an irony in itself, a welcome irony if you ask me. I loved the way he manipulated florals and birds this season and I knew that I would be raving about it from the moment I saw that first piece of white strapless silk gown printed with cherry blossom branches and birds! Each piece is seemingly made with such intricate detailing that you can’t help but wonder how he was able to finish the collection in time for his show. I also adored how Thakoon experimented with shapes this season from leaner silhouettes in his opening, evolving into something more grandeur and full by using peplums and bubble skirts towards the latter end. Brilliant if I can say so myself.
All in all, it was one amazing show – the thinking he put into it and the excellent use of contradiction in colors, themes and shapes, yet maintaining a cohesive show. Doing that takes talent and that’s something I think he’s proven again and again. So here’s to the perfect spring-summer irony! May it flourish as the season hits it marks in the months to come!
