Season's Round Up # 6: PRADA SPRING SUMMER 2013 MENSWEAR
It seems that minimalism rules the runway this year as Prada showcases a collection that is devoid of any brightness & patterns for her Spring-Summer 2013 Menswear collection. Unlike her past 2 season's where we saw a lot of emphasis on floral or cartoon patterns and bright, vibrant colors, this season focuses on color blocking and influence most likely taken from sportswear given the track suits andtennis bands. A white band seemed to be the cohesive link to the entire collection - featured prominently on the insides of slim cut slacks, to the neckline of a top or even the cross strap of flat leather sandals. Much later on in the show, you'll see these bands progress into more "summer" colors such as bordeaux, bright and deep blue, greens and off-white and beige - but honestly you won't see much other than these. I thought that the colors used were more suited for Fall as I've seen designers such as Céline use them in previous Fall collection(s).
I can't say that I'm thrilled with this showing, as I personally prefer to stick with bright colors and patterns for Spring Summer and to top it off I'm not too much into sportswear. But that being said, I think Mama Miuccia did an impeccable job in landing a very avant grade collection, whilst ensuring strong appeal amongst a lot of people. What I love though about the collection is the exquisite sense of layering used to achieve a full look - which is more or less my forte [lol!]. Also, the attention to detail is evident in each of the looks mainly delivered via the use of a band of color to arrive at various color blocked pieces, my faves of which would be the striking sandals, the polo tees and round neck shirts with pops of vibrant colors on the collar and buttons as well as [surprised as I am] those trousers with bands of color on the inner portion, which I dare say is very very sexy on a man! Rarr!
That's about it for Prada this upcoming season. So far, minimalism seems to rule the runway for SS 2013. Fitting for the come back of Jil Sander no [LOL!]? I think I've only seen a couple of shows where bright colors & patterns were at the forefront of their designs such as those of Dolce & Gabbana, Jonathan Saunders and Versace. As for the rest, color or striking details are used at a bare minimum to achieve a shocking effect on classic, contemporary pieces. We'll see how it goes for the few more shows I'm quite keen to catch up on, so do watch out for those!
