THE JOURNEY of DIAMOND WALKER BESPOKE SHOES
I was fortunate enough to be invited to the Meet & Greet of Diamond Walker Bespoke Shoes Creative Director Oh Deock Jin [aka DJ] at Atelier Pour Homme in Marina Bay Sands. And I must say it was such a thrilling and inspiring experience. At the event, DJ spoke a bit about his philosophy in creating shoes, which is fairly simple - "good shoes heighten the style & dignity of a man". There was also a short background on Diamond Walker's journey and I must say that it has been nothing short of extraordinary. It took years of research, understanding the market and trends and finally perfecting the art of designing shoes and bespoke shoemaking. The techniques utilized by their trained master craftsmen are honed by hand, which has allowed them to ensure that the highest caliber and quality shoes are delivered to each customer.
After the short history, DJ did a demonstration of the process they undertake in crafting each of their unique and customized shoes. To say the least, it looked like an exact science, using precise measurements and understanding of each customer's feet. No part of your feet will be left unturned - from the exact length and width and every permutation of curvature your feet has - to ensure that each pair made is of the best comfort and made to the customer's liking. A discussion then ensues as to the type of design you want made, followed by a through understanding of each little detail you want on your customized shoes.
He then also shortly discussed about the various types of leather available and I was drooling when they brought out this pair of gorgeous brogue-esque shoes made of crocodile leather. He spoke of the different parts of the crocodile that was used to make that specific pair and how apparently in Korea, the crocodile is some sort of symbol of prosperity and progress [if I'm not mistaken]. Also, he spoke about the effects and importance of caring for your shoes with leather creams and how it can eventually help age specific leathers - for instance a natural tan one - into something deeper and richer as time goes by.
It was such a refreshing experience and I loved every minute of it. Their shoes are truly works of art. No wonder big Korean stars Rain, Super Junior, Big Bang, Se7en are becoming fans of their shoes.
I honestly can say this is a brand we need to watch out for. With the rigor & creativity they have on top of the quality of shoes they churn out, it won't be any wonder if they begin to give Milanese shoe makers a run for their money. They've invaded Seoul Fashion Week and of late paraded in New York Fashion Week as well. Who's to say that they can't take the world by storm?
